Life Insurance Rate Class Checker

Carriers price life insurance partly on your build — your height and weight, compared against a "build chart." Enter yours below to see the rate class most insurers would likely start you in, and how much carrier choice can change it. It's an estimate, not a quote.

How Life Insurance Build Charts Work

Every life insurance carrier publishes a confidential build chart — a table pairing each height with the maximum weight allowed for each rate class (Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, and then "table ratings" for higher weights). Underwriters look up your height, find your weight, and read off the best class you qualify for on build alone. BMI is a useful shorthand for this, which is what the tool above uses.

The key thing most people don't realize: these charts are not standardized. The same 5'9", 230 lb applicant can be Standard at a build-tolerant carrier and table-rated at a stricter one. That single difference can mean hundreds of dollars a year on the same coverage.

What the Rate Classes Mean

  • Preferred Plus / Preferred — the best (lowest) rates; build is within the carrier's healthiest range.
  • Standard Plus / Standard — the most common classes; solid rates for an average build.
  • Table ratings (Table 1–8+) — each "table" adds roughly 25% to the Standard premium, stacked in steps, for higher builds or other risk factors.
  • Tobacco — a separate smoker class applied on top, typically 2–3× the non-tobacco premium.

How to Get a Better Rate Class

  • Shop build-friendly carriers. This is the biggest lever — the right carrier can move you up a full class with no change to your health.
  • Apply with an independent broker who knows which insurers are lenient on build for your specific numbers, instead of applying blindly to one company.
  • Lock in younger. Rates rise with age; a level-term policy locks today's class for the whole term.
  • Document recent, stable weight loss — some carriers will credit a sustained lower weight.
