How We Ranked These Carriers

Not every insurance company treats a DUI the same way. Some will decline you outright if your conviction is less than five years old. Others will write a policy 12 months after your conviction date — at a higher rate, but a policy nonetheless.

We ranked these six carriers based on criteria that actually matter to someone with a DUI on their record:

  • Minimum waiting period — how soon after conviction they will consider your application
  • Table rating severity — how much extra they charge and how quickly the surcharge drops
  • Underwriting flexibility — willingness to look at the full picture rather than just the conviction
  • Rate competitiveness — actual premiums for DUI applicants vs. the carrier’s standard rates
  • Track record — how consistently they approve DUI cases in practice, not just on paper

We place these cases regularly. The rankings below reflect what we see in real underwriting decisions, not just what carriers publish in their guidelines.

1. Prudential — Best Overall for DUI Applicants

Minimum wait: 12 months | Typical rating: Table B-D at 3 years

Prudential earns the top spot because they combine the shortest waiting period of any major carrier with reasonable table ratings. Their underwriters genuinely evaluate the circumstances rather than applying a blanket penalty.

Prudential’s DUI guidelines:

  • Single DUI, 12+ months ago: Will consider at Table D-F. Requires completion of court-ordered programs and no other alcohol-related history.
  • Single DUI, 3+ years ago: Table B-D with clean record since. This is where Prudential really shines — their Table B rate is often lower than competitors’ Table D.
  • Single DUI, 5+ years ago: Standard to Table A. If your health is otherwise good, you may get Standard rates.
  • Single DUI, 7+ years ago: Preferred rates possible.
  • Multiple DUIs: Will consider if the most recent is 5+ years ago and there is documented evidence of treatment/recovery.

Why Prudential stands out: They are one of the few carriers that will distinguish between a DUI with a BAC of 0.09 and one with a BAC of 0.18. Lower BAC levels receive more favorable treatment.

Minimum wait: 24 months | Typical rating: Table B-C at 3 years

Banner Life (part of Legal & General America) does not have the shortest waiting period, but where they excel is in the actual dollar amount you pay. Their base rates for term life insurance are among the lowest in the industry, which means even after a table rating, your premium is competitive.

Banner Life’s DUI guidelines:

  • Single DUI, 2-3 years ago: Table C-D. They want to see completed programs and no additional violations.
  • Single DUI, 3-5 years ago: Table A-B. Very competitive at this stage.
  • Single DUI, 5+ years ago: Standard rates available.
  • Multiple DUIs: Require 7+ years since last incident, documented sobriety.

The math in action: A 40-year-old male seeking $500K 20-year term might pay $42/month at Banner Life’s Standard rate. At Table B (50% surcharge), that becomes $63/month. At a competitor with a higher base rate of $52/month, their Table B would be $78/month. The lower base rate makes a meaningful difference.

3. Protective Life — Best for 3+ Years Post-DUI

Minimum wait: 36 months | Typical rating: Table A-B at 3 years

Protective Life will not look at you until three years have passed since your conviction, but once you hit that mark, their underwriting is remarkably favorable. Their approach is essentially: if you have demonstrated three years of responsible behavior, the DUI is a single incident, not a pattern.

Protective Life’s DUI guidelines:

  • Single DUI, 3-5 years ago: Table A-B. This is where Protective shines — Table A is only a 25% surcharge.
  • Single DUI, 5+ years ago: Standard rates. Clean history required.
  • Single DUI, 7+ years ago: Preferred possible.
  • Multiple DUIs: Generally declines unless last DUI is 10+ years ago.

Best for: Someone who is past the three-year mark and wants the lowest possible table rating. Protective’s Table A rate at 3 years beats most carriers’ rates at 5 years.

4. Lincoln Financial — Best for 5+ Years Clean Record

Minimum wait: 36 months | Typical rating: Standard at 5 years

Lincoln Financial is conservative on the front end — they want three years minimum and prefer five. But once you reach the five-year mark with a clean record, Lincoln offers some of the best rates in the market. Their underwriting philosophy rewards patience.

Lincoln Financial’s DUI guidelines:

  • Single DUI, 3-5 years ago: Table B-C. Standard underwriting process.
  • Single DUI, 5-7 years ago: Standard rates with clean MVR.
  • Single DUI, 7+ years ago: Preferred rates available. Lincoln is one of the most aggressive carriers at this point.
  • Wet reckless/reduced charge: Standard rates possible at 3 years.
  • Multiple DUIs: Case by case. Requires 7+ years, documented treatment.

Best for: Someone who has waited five or more years and wants to be rewarded with truly competitive rates. Lincoln’s Preferred class at 7+ years is priced as if the DUI never happened.

5. Mutual of Omaha — Best for Immediate Coverage

Minimum wait: None | Coverage type: Guaranteed issue or simplified issue

Mutual of Omaha serves a different purpose on this list. They are not the carrier for the best long-term rate. They are the carrier for when you need coverage now — your DUI was last month, you have a family depending on you, and you cannot wait three years.

Mutual of Omaha’s options:

  • Guaranteed issue whole life: No health questions, no MVR check. Coverage up to $25,000. Ages 45-85. Two-year graded benefit period (natural death in the first two years returns premiums plus 10% interest rather than the full face amount).
  • Simplified issue term: Limited health questions, no medical exam. Coverage up to $300,000. May still ask about DUI — answer honestly.
  • Fully underwritten: Standard DUI guidelines apply, 3+ year waiting period.

The tradeoff: You will pay significantly more per thousand of coverage with guaranteed issue. A 50-year-old male might pay $85/month for $25,000 of guaranteed issue coverage vs. $45/month for $500,000 of term coverage at Standard rates. But if you need immediate coverage, this is the solution.

Best for: Bridge coverage while waiting for traditional underwriting eligibility. Buy a guaranteed issue policy now, then replace it with a fully underwritten policy in 3-5 years.

6. North American — Best for Younger Applicants

Minimum wait: 24 months | Typical rating: Table B-D at 3 years

North American (part of Sammons Financial Group) is worth highlighting for applicants under 40. Their age-based pricing is aggressive for younger demographics, which means even with a table rating, a 28-year-old with a DUI can secure affordable coverage.

North American’s DUI guidelines:

  • Single DUI, 2-3 years ago: Table C-D. Must have completed all court requirements.
  • Single DUI, 3-5 years ago: Table A-B.
  • Single DUI, 5+ years ago: Standard rates.
  • BAC consideration: Like Prudential, North American factors in BAC level. Under 0.12 receives more favorable treatment.

Rate example: A 30-year-old male with a DUI 3 years ago seeking $500K 20-year term might pay $38-45/month at North American’s Table B. The same applicant at a carrier with less competitive young-adult pricing might pay $55-65/month at the same table rating.

Single DUI vs. Multiple DUIs

The difference between a single DUI and multiple DUIs is not just “more expensive.” It fundamentally changes how carriers evaluate your application.

Single DUI

A single DUI tells an underwriter: this person made a mistake. Most adults understand that. The underwriting question is simply: how long ago, and is there any pattern of alcohol misuse?

With a single DUI and no other red flags:

  • Most carriers will offer coverage within 2-3 years
  • Table ratings are moderate (Table A-D)
  • Full rate recovery to Preferred class is possible within 7-10 years
  • No substance abuse questionnaire required at most carriers

Two DUIs

Two DUIs shift the narrative. Underwriters now see a potential pattern rather than a one-time event. The approach changes significantly:

  • Timeline matters enormously: Two DUIs 8 years apart are treated very differently from two DUIs 2 years apart
  • Waiting periods double: Most carriers want 5-7 years since the most recent incident
  • Table ratings are steeper: Expect Table D-F initially
  • Substance abuse questionnaire: Many carriers will require you to complete a detailed alcohol use questionnaire
  • Fewer carriers will compete: Your pool of willing carriers shrinks from 15-20 to perhaps 5-8

Best carriers for two DUIs: Prudential (5+ years since last), North American (5+ years, documented treatment), and Transamerica (7+ years).

Three or More DUIs

Three or more DUIs put you in a genuinely difficult category. Most traditional carriers will decline regardless of how much time has passed. Your options are:

  • Guaranteed issue — no questions asked, limited coverage
  • Simplified issue — limited health questions, moderate coverage
  • Specialty carriers — a small number of carriers specialize in extreme high-risk cases
  • Group coverage — employer-sponsored life insurance typically does not ask about driving records

An independent broker with high-risk experience is essential in this situation. We have placed cases with three DUIs, but it requires knowing exactly which underwriter at which carrier to approach.

How to Choose the Right Carrier

Choosing the right carrier depends on where you are in your post-DUI timeline:

Less than 2 years since DUI:

  • Prudential is your best bet for fully underwritten coverage
  • Consider Mutual of Omaha guaranteed issue as bridge coverage
  • Do not apply broadly — each decline goes on your MIB record

2-3 years since DUI:

  • Shop Prudential, Banner Life, and North American simultaneously
  • An independent broker can submit to all three at once
  • Expect Table B-D ratings — focus on the carrier with the lowest base rate

3-5 years since DUI:

  • Your options open up significantly — add Protective and Lincoln Financial to the mix
  • This is the sweet spot for competitive shopping
  • Table A-B ratings are achievable, meaning only 25-50% above standard rates

5+ years since DUI:

  • You should be getting Standard or near-Standard rates
  • If a carrier is still quoting you Table C or higher, walk away and find another
  • Lincoln Financial and Protective are particularly competitive at this stage

7+ years since DUI:

  • You should qualify for Preferred rates at most carriers
  • If you are being penalized at this point, you are applying to the wrong company
  • Consider having your broker re-shop your existing policy — you may save significantly

The bottom line: The best carrier for you depends on timing, the number of incidents, and your overall health. Working with a broker who places DUI cases regularly — not one who handles them occasionally — makes the difference between overpaying and getting the rate you deserve. Frequently Asked Questions

Which life insurance company is most lenient for DUI applicants?

Prudential is generally the most lenient major carrier for DUI applicants. They will consider applicants as early as 12 months post-conviction for a single DUI, and their table ratings are often lower than competitors. Banner Life is a close second, with very competitive rates for table-rated applicants.

Can I get life insurance immediately after a DUI?

Yes, but your options are limited. Mutual of Omaha offers guaranteed issue policies with no health or driving record questions, though coverage caps at $25,000. For larger coverage amounts, most fully underwritten carriers require 12-36 months post-conviction before they will issue a policy.

How do insurance companies find out about my DUI?

Carriers order your Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) as part of the underwriting process. The MVR shows all convictions for the past 3-10 years depending on the state. They also check the MIB database, which records any previous application disclosures. There is no way to hide a DUI from an underwriter.

Does it matter if my DUI was reduced to reckless driving?

Yes, it helps significantly. Most carriers treat a wet reckless or reduced charge more favorably than a full DUI conviction. Prudential and Lincoln Financial, for example, may offer Standard rates just 2-3 years after a reduced charge rather than the 5+ years they require for a full DUI.

Will my rates ever go back to normal after a DUI?

For most carriers, a single DUI effectively disappears from underwriting consideration after 7-10 years with no additional incidents. At that point, you can qualify for Preferred or even Preferred Plus rates if your health is otherwise excellent. The key is maintaining a clean record.
